My Christmas Light Show

Christmas Light ShowThanks for stopping by, and welcome to my Christmas Light Show page! I run a synchronized Christmas lights display in Alpharetta, GA. Below you will find facts, pictures, and videos about the display.

How Can I see This Show?

I have recently moved to a new location. The new place gives me plenty of room to add new fixtures this year. The show is located at my house, 4220 Tivoli Way, Alpharetta, GA 30004. If you want to drop by, the show starts at 6 PM and runs until 9 PM beginning on Dec 1st and going until Jan 6th. The neighborhood is gated so when the gates close for the night, the show ends. When you drive up, tune your radio to 89.9FM.

How Do You Do That?

I use a software / hardware solution called Light-O-Rama. The hardware allows for the lights to be turned on and off at different intensities based on a sequence written to music. I am currently running the show with 128 channels.

The music is made possible by an FM radio transmitter in my house. It is connected to the computer running the light show and broadcast to you in your car.

Facts

One of the #1 questions I get asked is "What does your power bill look like." Last year (2011) my bill was only around $40 more than I usually pay this time of year. Since the lights are constantly changing and blinking, the power consumption goes way down as opposed to someone running a Griswold type display where everything is on 100% of the time. That being said, there are 17,850 34,700+ lights in the display running on 8 separate 20 amp breakers. If all the lights were on at the same time, they would draw around 120 amps from the power source. That is a good chunk of what the power company allots me on my breaker box.

Why Bother?

Christmas Light ShowSome people like to talk about the true meaning of Christmas or their childhood memories. For me, this madness can be explained away in two reasons:

  1. If you take a look at my About Me page, you will find that I am a techie geek in the worst way. From the very beginning, I have always been into anything and everything with a power cord or batteries.
  2. I like to make people smile. What better way to do that than a light show to music?

The 2012 Playlist

Once again, I got started late this year. With the new yard, I could not start programming until I knew what the display looked like. Unfortunately, this year looks a little like a re-run from last, just double the lights. I did make a flyer to help promote the yard. You can view it here.

The 2011 Playlist

I got started very late this year. In my extreme optimism, I thought I could utilize all 170,000 lights I have in the garage and write 20 songs. Boy was I off my rocker... Currently there are 4 songs that run in rotation. Since the first show has finally happened, I will be writing all year long to add to the display for next year. In the mean time, I have a nice 20 minute show for you to watch.
